Rustic bedrooms are usually very cozy and have a natural flair. Sometimes they may be a bit rough, but that depends on the materials. The style originated from natureism, which is often called the ‘ecological lifestyle.’ It’s about being as natural as possible in everything you do. In this case, it also means using natural materials such as wood for your furniture pieces. Other typical objects are stone or clay tiles, terracotta pots, and country-style accessories with embroidery or crochet elements. Of course, you can make your room more sophisticated by adding rawhide leather to your decorating items, too!
A nice pair of rustic nightstands are a must for every rustic bedroom! There are lots of different types you can choose from. I especially like the ones with storage space, because they also make your room tidier.
Since rustic bedrooms are usually small, you need to find solutions for your limited space, which are even more valuable than their larger counterparts. Try to get freestanding furniture or decorate your wall with shelves or hooks. You can hang little lanterns, too, but please don’t overdo it; too much light makes any room look smaller. Last but not least: everything in your rustic bedroom should have its own place! Don’t just throw things on the ground or put them on chairs – that would totally destroy the whole style statement! So next time you want to relax in an enchanting setting, embrace your inner rustic!
The bed is the center of your bedroom, so choose it carefully! A king-size or queen-size bed with a sturdy frame is always great for rustic styles. There are lots of different types on the market right now, but I’d recommend getting one made from wood. If you don’t want to spend that much money, get yourself a metal frame instead – they are also pretty rustic-looking.
If you really prefer sleeping on the floor (or even outside), try adding some blankets and pillows on top of your hardwood floor. It might feel weird at first, but after a while, you’ll get used to it, and you might even like it.
Another great idea is to use a cow-hide rug on the floor – especially if you’re going for a raw, rustic look. Don’t put the bed next to the window because that way it’ll look unbalanced. You can also get some nightstands or small tables and put them on each side of the bed, so everything looks symmetrical!
Every bedroom needs a dresser, so don’t forget about this essential piece of furniture! A nice rustic one with metal drawers will work well in any style of bedroom, but an antique one also looks very sophisticated. If your room doesn’t have enough space for a big dresser, just get yourself some shelves instead and store your clothes there.
If you have an especially small room, you should keep the dresser very minimalistic. That way, it’ll make your room look bigger and more luxurious! If you do want to put some decorative items on top of it, I recommend using candles, books, or vases with flowers.
Last but not least, don’t forget about your night light! A rustic bedroom can get pretty dark at night, so you might trip over something if you don’t have a little lamp by your bedside table. Also, don’t use any big ornaments here because they’ll only take away the coziness from this room.
A classic statement piece for every type of decorating is a nice armoire! There are lots of different styles and sizes, so you can always find something that will fit in your room.
An antique one with all the carving looks really sophisticated, and it’s also a great solution for smaller rooms because it’ll make them look bigger (just like the dresser). I’d recommend getting one in white color instead of black or brown if you want to create a more airy feel.
You don’t need to worry about armoires taking away too much space from your bedroom: most of them come with hidden storage compartments! So next time you’re having a party and need some extra place, just close the doors, and you’ve made yourself an instant bar cart… It’s that easy! If you’re going for a casual style, there are also some very nice armoires with baskets or shelves.
An oriental armoire is another great idea for your rustic bedroom – especially if you want to make it look even more exotic. If you’re not into that, then I recommend getting a really small one with only 2-3 drawers. It’s also pretty easy to find something like that in any type of material, so just play around until you find the perfect item!
Of course, no rustic bedroom will be complete without some kind of shabby chic decor items. You can get yourself a few sheepskins and place them on top of your bed or furniture. Antlers are also a must-have if you want to embrace this style 100%.
Lay down some floral pillows or an afghan blanket on top of the sheepskins to give your room that coziness you want without looking too wild (add some candles for extra romance).
I’d definitely recommend getting yourself a French armoire if you like antiques. They are very romantic and also come in lots of different colors. Just make sure you don’t get one with all those carvings because it will make your room look too busy (back to the casual style again!)
Rustic bedrooms always look beautiful with white bed sheets, so if you can afford it, then go for two sets! One for summer and one for winter – it’s also great because you won’t have to wash them as often. Also, don’t forget to add some comfy pillows in different colors and shapes (square, round).
If you’re on a budget, then I’d recommend getting either bed sheets or shabby chic decor items. Of course, you can always find really nice stuff for under $30 (pillows, blankets), so it won’t break the bank.
Rustic bedrooms look perfect with lots of plants, but they can make your room look too busy if you use too much of them. It’s best to get around 6-7 plants max and place them everywhere – they’ll make your room seem bigger than it really is! I also recommend investing in fake ones because they’re easier to maintain… just don’t tell anyone about this 🙂
One of the most important elements of a rustic bedroom is lighting. Of course, the main source should be the lamp next to your bed, but if you want to add even more romance, then get yourself some candles and small lamps. You can also use wall lights instead of table lamps: just make sure they’re dimmable, so you don’t bump into them in the middle of the night!
Of course, there are lots of other furniture pieces you can add to give your room a rustic feel, but I think these should be enough for now. You can always experiment with different styles and try to mix them together. Good luck with your own creation.
